Abstracts

I was amazed at how the land looked from above. From the ground, generally, there was nothing remarkable about the surroundings. You would never suspect that there was this crazy scene spread out all around you. One place was a five minute drive from the hotel at the edge of a hamlet. Another was on a nearly featureless volcanic plain. Zero interest from the ground. Crazy stuff from 200 meters above it. Go even higher and the landscape opens up into this epic scene.

Just another grand landscape.

But stay below 500 meters and look down, and whoa.

Looking through these images, I realized that when I am shooting from the air, verses from the ground or atop a mountain, I am drawn to leading lines, S-curves, and patterns. A lot of the time I took a picture without really knowing what I was shooting. A lot of the images I captured were when I was flying back to the launch point, and mor focused on getting the drone on the ground than being artsy fartsy. Along the way, something caught my eye for some reason and I shot it. Then moved on. Didn'‘t think about it until I got the images on the computer days after the workshop.

Leading lines and S curves!

I would love to repeat this workshop. The variety and grandeur of the landscapes is insane and I’m sure we only sampled a small set of the potential shots. On these abstracts, especially, I suspect that any repeat visits to the same spot would produce an entirely different result.
